First Light is making changes to the way it conducts its advocacy work.
The branding of First Voice, which was the group’s urban Indigenous coalition, is being retired.
Now, a First Light Advocacy Council, which will bring together elders, community representatives, and program coordinators from various areas, is being established.
Executive director Stacey Howse says the changes aren’t about ending the work – they’re about evolving the way they do things and bringing that work back to its roots under First Light.
She says First Voice was successful, but over the years there became a bit of separation from First Light as an organization. She says the purpose of the changes is to bring that work back under the First Light umbrella to make sure it is not only community-driven, but also community-led.
