The town of Port aux Basques is removing salt and sand boxes throughout the community.
Council says the decision was not made lightly, but was necessary due to what it calls the ongoing misuse and abuse of the salt boxes.
The increased cost of salt and sand was one factor, but the town says there were also liability concerns associated with the placement and use of the boxes.
The boxes will be removed starting today and council will review whether any salt boxes will remain in service at the town’s discretion.
