Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a speech highlighting national unity and praising the country’s diversity as a strength in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning that “Canada lives because of the United States.”
Trump’s words had an ominous tone as he delivered his speech to the World Economic Forum a day after Carney received a standing ovation for his rallying call to middle powers against “hegemons.”
Carney spoke to reporters ahead of a cabinet retreat in Quebec City, identifying Canada’s diversity as a unifying strength.
“Canada can’t solve all the world’s problems, but we can show that another way is possible, that the arc of history isn’t destined to be warped towards authoritarianism and exclusion. It can still bend towards progress and justice.”
