Ottawa has reportedly drawn up plans to ban children under the age of 14 from accessing social media as part of new legislation aimed at preventing online harm.
The Globe and Mail is reporting that federal officials have drawn up plans to include a ban on social media for children under the age of 14. That’s a year older than current restrictions for children under the age of 13.
The change would require cabinet approval.
The Australian government recently introduced a similar ban for children under the age of 16 on platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, X, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
Canada and the U.K. are now looking at similar measures to try to reduce the harmful impact of social media access on young people.
