The NDP is calling for a clear timeline from government on commitments made to address the rate of intimate partner violence in the province. That includes a recommendation made to introduce pre-conviction ankle bracelets to monitor offenders.
The MHA for St. John’s East – Quidi Vidi, Sheilagh O’Leary, says the issue of intimate partner violence extends “far beyond” the victim by undermining families and destabilizing communities.
O’Leary has written Justice Minister Helen Conway Ottenheimer seeking a timeline on the implementation of key recommendations to strengthen protections and improve safety for survivors.
Among the recommendations made by Act Now is the introduction of pre-conviction ankle monitoring of offenders, something the minister previously raised questions about in the House of Assembly while in Opposition.
O’Leary, who is seeking confirmation on what work has already been completed, is looking for a timeline for implementation.
