RCMP are reporting positive community feedback to a new initiative involving regular checks on prolific offenders who have been released into the community on court orders.
The RCMP’s West District General Investigation Section in Corner Brook and in Labrador arrested six people in January in violation of their court orders, with two others arrested on outstanding warrants.
All four checks conducted on the weekend were compliant.
A similar program is in place on the east coast as well.
Staff Sergeant Danny Murrin of the General Investigation Section West says they’re checking on offenders who are well known to police, and the community.
“Right now, all the feedback we’ve got is very positive,” says Murrin, “people are coming up to us and showing appreciation for the work that’s being done. And they’re pleased to see that prolific offenders are being dealt with accordingly.”
