As the provincial government makes preparations for the 2026 budget, the mayor of St. John’s would like to see measures introduced that would reduce their reliance on property taxes.
Danny Breen says there are a number of priorities for the city when it comes to what they are hoping to see in the budget, including capital works projects and housing.
Breen says fiscal arrangements with municipalities are also a consideration.
He says there is a “high reliance” on property taxes in communities across the province, and they need “new tools” to take some of that reliance off.
