The late Jesse Jackson is being remembered as a ‘true giant’ in advancing civil rights in the United States.
The Reverend Jesse Jackson, who was a prominent leader in the civil rights movement for more than half a century, and who ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988, passed away this week at the age of 84.
Former vice-president Kamala Harris called Jackson “one of the America’s greatest patriots” while U.S. President Donald Trump called him a “good man.”
Locally, Laurabel Mba says he’s also being recognized in the black community as someone who made a real impact.
“The work he’s done has…helped move some of the civil rights goals ahead over the course of time, and he did it in a way that one; let the black community feel supported, feel seen, but also inspired allies to come along on this work, so that they didn’t just feel that these kinds of progressions for improvement were only supposed to be done by black communities.”
