A Burin Peninsula resident believes some of the decades-old refuse washing up on beaches in far-off Orkney is coming from the Fortune Head Ecological Reserve.
Carl Slaney says the old landfill was bulldozed over a few decades ago and because of its proximity to a unique geological rock formation, is now part of the Fortune Head Ecological Reserve formed in 2006.
Slaney says changing climate, and coastal erosion means the old landfill site is starting to spill its contents over the cliffs and into the water below and he strongly believes, based on ocean currents, that the old garbage is part of the detritus found washing up on Scottish beaches.
David Warner of Orkney believes some of the old garbage picked up on area beaches comes from Newfoundland.
Slaney says a consultant report on the old dump site was completed last year. He says the province has to adhere to the recommendations made, and not wait any longer.
He says the Department of Environment is bound to address the mandatory recommendations made in the report. He cautions against any further delays as the cost of remediation will only rise higher.
Slaney says he’s been in contact with Warner about the garbage showing up on the other side of the Atlantic.
