Premier Tony Wakeham says Newfoundland and Labrador is “built for defence” and is ready to support the federal government’s Defence Industrial Strategy.
The premier says with Ottawa’s strategic priorities in mind, he is set to work with local partners to launch a collective approach within the federal government’s plan.
The Premier’s Office says Newfoundland and Labrador has the industrial capacity, infrastructure, workforce and strategic proximity to “advance Canada’s national security,” something Wakeham discussed with Prime Minister Mark Carney in November.
He cites 5 Wing Goose Bay as part of that strength.
The premier says strengthening Arctic sovereignty “cannot be defined solely by increased military presence”, but must also include “meaningful investment in northern communities” and ensuring that residents have the services, infrastructure and opportunities needed to thrive.
