Gone are the days of “The Bubble,” a visible toxic mix of waste spewing straight into St. John’s Harbour – now, a metro area MP says St. John’s has one of the cleanest harbours for a city of its size in the country.
And with new upgrades and the planned expansion of the regional wastewater facility, Tom Osborne says it’s going to become even cleaner.
The federal, provincial and municipal governments are spending about $140-million on upgrades to the existing sewage treatment plant, and design work on an expansion.
The MP for Cape Spear says the added capacity will allow for residential and commercial growth in the metro region.
“A harbour that was once considered a very dirty one is now a much cleaner harbour which is better for the environment, better for tourism and better for the fishery because we have people fishing just outside harbour,” said the MP.
