The Mayor of Mount Pearl expects the city will see a significant change in traffic volume once the Team Gushue Highway is complete.
Construction ramps up again on Wednesday with a number of closures in and around Pitts Memorial near Commonwealth Avenue until the end of July.
Dave Aker says it will mean some short-term pain, but it is necessary to cut down on traffic going through the city on a daily basis.
Aker says traffic from the half-finished highway has already caused “a lot of damage” to Park Avenue, with people using it to cut to Goulds and the Southern Shore.
“We know from cell phone data that a lot of those people that are coming down that route are actually headed to the Southern Shore, to the Goulds, or that part of the Avalon Peninsula,” he told VOCM News.
“We’re thinking that when the road opens, that traffic, that queue that you see there at Topsail road will largely end. There’s been a lot of damage done to Park Avenue because of the extra traffic that’s been downloaded when the highway was complete, and Smallwood Drive has seen suffers.”
