The federal fisheries minister says she plans to take the next few weeks to analyze the results of a survey on the recreational fishery before making any decision on possible changes.
DFO released its “What We Heard” survey results on the food fishery, showing a majority of respondents in this province want the dates extended.
Ninety-five per cent of the nearly 10,000 participants in the survey were from Newfoundland and Labrador, proving how important the issue is in this province.
Joanne Thompson says many participants cited significant weather concerns, which is something she will be taking into consideration as she makes her final decision.
“I want Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to know that this process is transparent—that’s why we’ve released the What We Heard—and I also want them to trust that the information and the overwhelming participation in the survey is a significant driver in the decision making.”
“I don’t want to presuppose anything, but I also know timing is important and we’re not going to delay this.”
