Safety NL is advising people to take the time to adjust to summer driving now that more motorcycles and e-bikes are on the roads.
The chief supervising instructor for motorcycles and off-road vehicle instructor with Safety NL, Darrin Dunphy, says bikes aren’t as noticeable on the road as other vehicles.
“You know, it doesn’t catch your eye like an F-250.” He suggests that motorcycle riders try to make eye contact with other drivers to make sure that they’re seen.
He says drivers need to be well aware of what’s on the road before pulling into traffic.
Dunphy says if you only turn your head right and left quickly, you may be moving forward before your brain registers what you just saw. “It actually takes a second, especially if the object that’s coming toward you is small, such as our motorcycles. The brain doesn’t pick it up as quickly.”
He suggests looking a little longer in all oncoming directions. “You’re looking at 4, 5, 6 seconds,” before proceeding into traffic.
