One of the unions that represents workers at Memorial University says funding set aside in the provincial budget shows that MUN “is not being restored.”
CUPE local 1615 represents administrative, instructional, technical, and technical support workers at the institution.
They say that while year-over-year funding has increased by five per cent, there has been “no meaningful investment to replace years of lost revenue,” meaning MUN is left to absorb the costs.
President Bill Kavanagh says without additional money, the university will offer fewer services, supports, and employ fewer people.
Noting that the impact is already being seen on campus, he cites $500-million in deferred maintenance as an example, and says his members are “on edge.”
Kavanagh says morale is low, and people are “just waiting for the next announcement.” He says it is not just about people’s jobs; they are also worried about maintaining services for students.
