The Goulds is getting a new fire station, and when it opens it will be staffed entirely by career firefighters.
The federal government is providing over $12.7-million for the new facility, which was first announced in 2019. It will be located on the main road.
The city says the current station is staffed from Monday to Friday with career firefighters until 4 p.m., with volunteer coverage on evenings and weekends.
When the new building opens, the staffing model will expand to a full time, 24/7 career firefighter operation. The city says crews were informed of the change when the facility was first announced, and all were supportive of the concept.
The building will include three drive-through apparatus bays, a kitchen and living area, sleeping quarters, training facilities, and administrative space.
The station is expected to reduce operating and maintenance costs, as well as achieve a 30-40 per cent reduction in total building ownership costs.
The city says it will also reduce space heating and energy demand, and will be designed to the Passive House energy standard.
Construction will start immediately, and is expected to be completed by January 2028.
