Premier Tony Wakeham says he remains committed to building ferries and other ships in the province.
Opposition transportation critic Jamie Korab accused government of “backtracking” on its promise to build new ferries in the province.
Korab cited a recent RFP seeking a consultant to review the “capacity and readiness of the provincial shipbuilding industry” in constructing new ferries.
Premier Wakeham says the RFP is part of the province’s process.
“We’re actually doing our due diligence. The previous Liberal Party had a thing about making announcements before anything was done. What we’re doing is actually the homework, and that’s part of the planning for this.”
“You have to be prepared, you have to understand what the capabilities are, and all I can tell you is that the people, the business people that I speak to are looking forward to that process.”
