The capital city admits that the improper disposal of needles continues to be an issue in St. John’s, including on city properties.

The city was responding to suggestions that carelessly discarded used needles and other criminal activity – including vehicle break-ins – have become a problem around Central Fire Station and other sites in St. John’s.

St. John’s says it provides training to all staff, including firefighters, promoting parking lot safety and ensuring that all vehicles are locked.

The municipality says firefighters are also reminded of the importance of keeping apparatus and station doors closed when not actively being used. Security protocols in place, however it can’t provide details on those activities as it may undermine procedures.
