People who live in the east end off Elizabeth Avenue and Torbay Road are concerned about a housing project which they say will make a bad situation worse in terms of traffic and safety.
Two 3-storey apartment buildings containing 66 units are behind a proposed zoning change on Mount Cashel Road, but there’s a public meeting tonight.
Maureen Whelan, who lives on Mount Cashel Road, says 66 two-bedroom units will increase traffic, on-street parking, and make the street more dangerous than it already is.

Whelan says a study counted cars and measured anticipated wait times at intersections, but did not address residents’ concerns about the safety of an already overburdened small residential street.
“We have a school, Mary Queen of Peace, in our neighbourhood with 600 students and 55 staff, many of whom use Mount Cashel Road via Tiffany Lane to access the school, so we have a ton of traffic for a little street,” says Whelan.
Whelan says they understand the need for more housing, but not all housing needs can be met on Mount Cashel Road. They’re asking the city to reject the rezoning request.
The meeting, which is part of the rezoning process, takes place tonight at City Hall at 7:00.
