The Parti Quebecois will form the next government in Quebec after outpolling the other parties in Monday’s election.
The Coalition Avenir Quebec had won majority governments in the last two elections, but polls heading into this vote suggested the separatist Parti Quebecois was in the driver’s seat.
The Liberals and Conservatives totaled a lot of seats but the governing CAQ was obliterated. CAQ Premier Christine Frechette was in St. John’s in August to sign a revised hydro deal with Newfoundland and Labrador.
The PQ, with its separatist leanings, will form a minority government with the Liberals as the official opposition and the Tories the third party.
