Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be among the hundreds of people expected to attend Thursday’s state funeral for John Crosbie.
The legendary political figure has been lying in state this week in advance of the funeral service at the Anglican Cathedral in downtown St. John’s. The service will be broadcast live on VOCM beginning at 2 p.m..
Former Prime Ministers Brian Mulroney and Joe Clark will also be there, with Mulroney delivering a eulogy for his former cabinet colleague.
Crosbie’s son, Ches, who is the leader of this province’s PC Party is also expected to speak at the service. John Crosbie’s other children, Michael and Beth, will deliver readings during the funeral.
Dozens of people from various parts of the country are scheduled to fly to the province to say a final farewell to the politician who started his career in the mid-1960s.
Archdeacon Roger Whalen says the Crosbie family has chosen the traditional language service from the Book of Common Prayer. He says the cathedral can hold just over 800 people.
Whalen says it will be a very recognizable Anglican funeral – with the only addition being the dignitaries, pomp and ceremony and the media presence.
Whalen says music will play a prominent role in Thursday’s funeral. Opera singer David Pomeroy will perform with pianist Brian Way. The Anglican Cathedral Choir, under the direction of Sharon Whalen will be singing. The royal Newfoundland Regiment Band has also been asked to take part.
The funeral is set for 2 pm with doors opening at 12:30. While it is open to the public, attendees are advised that parking will be challenging and people are advised to arrange transportation.
