Just one day after the provincial government made amendments allowing crossbows to be used by hunters in the province, a man from Sandringham used his crossbow to harvest a black bear.
The president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Joseph Pennell, says the animal was taken down by the creator of a petition to have the regulations amended.
Pennell says that Jeff Samson shot down the black bear on Saturday around dusk just outside Sandringham on the Eastport Peninsula.
He says they are almost certain that it was the first animal to be harvested by crossbow in the province.
Pennell says nobody deserves it more than Samson, who fought so hard for the regulations to be amended.
