Thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians could be eligible for lucrative tax deductions as a result of having to work from home during the pandemic, but what that will look like remains to be seen.
Raquel Phillips is the President of the Tax Shelter on Blackmarsh Road.
She says details on who will and will not be entitled to workplace expenses in the home likely won’t be known until next tax season.
It will depend on the employer’s requirements, an employee’s workplace, and CRA rules, all of which can change.
Phillips says it gets even more complicated when it comes to the job description, whether that be salaried, commissioned, or self-employed.
She believes most of those who have been asked to work from home during the pandemic are salaried employees.
Those workers would require a T2200—or declaration of employment conditions—signed by their employer.
