A young woman from this province has been appointed to the very first National Agriculture Youth Council, and she’s the only one from Newfoundland and Labrador to make the cut.
27-year-old Kalysha Snow is the Climate Change Coordinator with the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture.
She was the only person from the province to be appointed to the council, despite some 800 applicants.
Snow applied for the position when she saw the posting back in January, and was delivered a pleasant surprise in June when she received an e-mail saying she had been selected to sit on the Council.
She hopes she can relay the information from youth in agriculture to the Council correctly, and earn her seat at the table.

Snow believes it’s important to have a youth council as there are many young voices that need to be heard, and also because many aren’t aware of how their food is produced.
As for the work the council will do, Snow says they’ll have their inaugural meeting at the end of August.
She says they’ll learn more about what they will be discussing then. However, a lot of the focus this year will be on climate change and adapting farming practices to climate change as it is impacting every province and their growing seasons.
Snow says it’s an honour to sit and represent Newfoundland and Labrador agriculture on behalf of the province’s youth.
