The provincial election campaign is well underway.
Premier Andrew Furey went live with the call Friday evening following a week that saw the government dole out $30-million in pre-election funding and sign tentative contracts with three of the province’s largest unions.
The Opposition parties have criticized the timing of the election since it will happen before voters get to see the results of Moya Greene’s report on how to fix the economy, as well as the budget in March.
They also take issue with Furey’s assertion that it’s safe enough to campaign now, as opposed to the spring or summer when more people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
Meanwhile, the Tories have a full slate of candidates and the Liberals will have by end of day. As of yesterday, the NDP had 20 confirmed candidates in place for the 40 districts in play.
And still, with the election, it’s unclear if NL Alliance Leader Graydon Pelley will be able to resume his campaign in the district of Humber-Gros Morne. Pelley was forced to suspend his bid after having to undergo emergency surgery on the weekend.
Premier Furey is on the west coast today. He will be campaigning in Corner Brook and Deer Lake.
Opposition Leader Ches Crosbie will be in three districts: Mount Pearl North, Mount Pearl-Southlands and St. john’s Centre. He will be making a policy announcement at 10:30 a.m. at the PC campaign headquarters.
NDP Leader Alison Coffin will be making a policy announcement at 11 a.m. at the NDP campaign headquarters.
