The Newfoundland Growlers are in talks with the City of St. John’s today about a victory parade.
The Growlers finished off the Toledo Walleye by a score of 4-3 last night before a packed house. The victory party spilled onto the streets of downtown.
Twelve months ago, the Growlers did not exist. They became the first expansion team in the ECHL since 1990 to win the Kelly Cup.
Co-owner Glenn Stanford says there will be plenty to do in the off-season as every player and member of the organization gets to have the cup for a day. Stanford says the cup will travel to every corner of North America as a result.
Co-owner Dean MacDonald says there is special meaning attached to the championship run.
Both Stanford and MacDonald lost their mothers over the past year. MacDonald lost his just after sealing the franchise.
He saw his mother the day after he went to Indiana to complete the deal. His mother said to make sure the big head of a Newfoundland Dog is stamped on the logo.
She passed away the next day.
