The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is not going to proceed with plans to deliver formal apologies to Inuit survivors of residential schools and their descendants at this time.
Premier Dwight Ball had promised such an apology early in his tenure, but his time as Premier is winding down. His plans to go to Labrador in March were put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite all the options being explored, the Premier says it wasn’t possible under the current public health measures to accommodate the anticipated number of people interested in attending the public events associated with an apology.
The Nunatsiavut Government thanks the Premier and says they will work with the next Premier on an apology.
