There are more complaints today about an agreement between Ottawa and Washington giving American harvesters 1,000 metric tonnes of yellowtail flounder off Newfoundland.
FFAW president Keith Sullivan says inshore harvesters should have a quota of yellowtail before it is given to the United States.
Yellowtail is managed by NAFO but the Canadian quota goes to offshore companies. If inshore harvesters wish to lay their hands on some, they have to go through those companies.
Sullivan says such “backroom deals” by the federal government only heighten frustrations felt by inshore harvesters.
