The provincial government has contracted a consortium to design, build, and manage the new mental health and addictions facility next to the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s.
Avalon Healthcare Partnership—a consortium of several entities including Marco Ltd and the Cahill Group—will oversee everything. It will replace the Waterford in about five years, but there will be fewer beds than the current facility.
Health Minister John Haggie says that’s because they’re moving toward community-based care. The new hospital will be a six-storey, 240,000 square foot facility that will accommodate 102 beds.
The estimated value of the hospital contract is $330-million.

Actual construction could start next spring, but site work begins this year so the HSC area will be a very busy place with many challenges.
The new hospital will include a replacement Agnes Cowan Hostel and a 1,000-unit parking garage.
Premier Dwight Ball says many have said they wished to do this project but only his government said they would do it.
