A provincial Liberal party leadership candidate says he’s focused on taking the politics out of decision-making and the issues facing the province.
John Abbott released a statement on the weekend agreeing with Opposition Leader Ches Crosbie’s position that the province must fight for its rights when it comes to Ottawa.
He says he couldn’t agree more and says that’s what he intends to do as premier.
As for agreeing with the Opposition leader, Abbott indicates it doesn’t matter where good ideas come from.
Abbott says Ottawa needs to know that the province is united in ensuring a credible fiscal plan.
He contends Newfoundland and Labrador needs support from Ottawa for issues like Muskrat Falls and the fishery and speaking with a united voice will send a strong message to the federal government.
Reassessment of Daycare Funding Needed to Keep Centres Open, says Abbott

Meanwhile, Abbott says current funding models for provincial daycares need to be addressed.
He was referencing the financial issues faced by at least one local child care operation in Shea Heights facing possible closure.
Panda Bear Daycare is facing financial strain due to the impact of COVID-19 and the way government funding programs are designed.
He says they need to keep the centre open and see where it can expand. He says if the current funding model is not working, then it needs to be changed.
