Thick black smoke from a garage fire just off Torbay Road last evening resulted in the closure of the Outer Ring Road for a short period.
Fire consumed a large residential garage at the last property on Harbour View Avenue.
Flames erupted shortly after 6:00—black, acrid smoke spewing northward over the embankment and in the path of the ORR at the Torbay Road ramps.
Several eastbound vehicles stopped, and people could be seen scrambling up the bank to get a look. Police ended up having to move them out of harm’s way.
Acting Platoon Chief Anthony Renouf says the garage contained potentially explosive tanks as well as usual garage items.
There were no injuries. The garage was destroyed, and some siding on the house melted.
Renouf says firefighters got control very quickly, saving the house and a camper trailer just feet away.
