A tense situation in Deer Lake came to a peaceful resolution after shots were reportedly fired in a residential area, yesterday afternoon.
Police descended on a property on Willow Place around noon after they were alerted to shots fired at a residence. The neighbourhood and nearby streets were closed to the public and residents were told to stay inside their homes.
RCMP from the Deer Lake, Corner Brook, and Rocky Harbour detachments established a safety perimeter with the assistance of the Deer Lake volunteer fire department.
Investigators determined that a 47-year-old man experiencing a mental health crisis fired two shots inside a garage, then entered a neighbouring garage and refused to exit.
Crisis negotiators and the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team were called in to assist. At 4:30—after lengthy negotiations—the man surrendered himself and was taken to the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook for mental health treatment.
The RCMP says there were no further incidents and no injuries as he was safely taken into custody.
The investigation continues.
