Dishes shook, wall hangings moved and people jumped from the bed to their feet as two earthquakes struck the north coast of Labrador at a time when most slept.
One quake, which registered 4.7 on the Richter Scale, barreled through at 5:35 a.m. Labrador Time, the second one to hit overnight. The first, a 4.5, occurred about three hours earlier.

Makkovik Mayor Barry Andersen says it sounded like a loud thunderclap directly over his house —skies were clear at the time— but he checked the house and found no sign of any cracks in the walls.
Andersen says a few carvings on a shelf tipped over, and a picture on the wall is slightly askew.
