Premier Andrew Furey is reiterating government’s commitment to ensuring the Come By Chance oil refinery continues to operate as a refinery into the future.
The immediate issue is the importance of keeping the facility in so-called ‘warm idle’ mode through the winter months, which Furey says is being discussed with the current owner, Silverpeak.
Nonetheless, Furey says the government will ensure Come By Chance is maintained as the valuable asset that it is.

He says the province is prepared to facilitate whatever work is necessary to make sure the refinery emerges from the winter in an “operating capacity.”
Furey says issues such as environmental liabilities are also top-of-mind for the province, but he says the primary concern is the future of the workforce at Come By Chance.
The premier declined comment on Silverpeak’s rejection of Origin International’s offer for the refinery, noting government is not privy to all of the discussions between two private companies.
