A 30-year-old Cottlesville man is facing a number of serious charges as the result of a shooting incident in Terra Nova Tuesday evening.
RCMP received a complaint around 7:40 of shots fired at a person in a remote area of the T’Railway west of Terra Nova and that the shooter had left the scene.
Kyle Rideout was taken into custody in Summerford just before midnight on Tuesday night.
He appeared in Gander court on Wednesday, charged with careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
The incident prompted police to issue a warning of an “active shooter” in the area, asking people to shelter in place.
District Policing Officer in Charge of the eastern region with the RCMP, Dan Austin says when they receive a call reporting a shooting, and the suspect is armed and on the move, that call becomes their highest priority.
All factors, including motivation of the suspect, direction of travel and if shots had been fired elsewhere had not been determined when the call came in, and communication was exacerbated by poor cell reception in the area.
Police issued a public alert via news organizations and social media regarding an active shooter and an Alert Ready notification was ready to go when Rideout was taken into custody.
RCMP say had the alert been issued the wording used would have described the incident as “shots fired” as opposed to “active shooter” as more information became available.
