The Fisheries Union is calling on Service Canada to resolve issues with the Fish Harvester Benefit.
The FFAW says it’s been hearing from members ever since the online application process opened August 5, reporting issues with the process and what the union calls “appalling” wait times for the helpline.
Among the issues reported to the FFAW are problems with internet service on the north and west coasts.
Others have been locked out of the application system for several days after receiving an error notice, but adding insult to injury according to President Keith Sullivan is that some members are being told they have to pay back the first portion of their benefit.
He says the intent of the system was to provide relief and reliable benefits to workers in a seasonal industry, but instead, it has proven to be a frustration to many harvesters.
