Mary Shortall will be representing the NDP for St. John’s East in the next federal election.
The president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour was officially confirmed this week as the NDP candidate for the seat currently occupied by Jack Harris, who will be retiring.
Shortall, who has spent over 40 years advocating for workers’ rights, says that when Harris announced he was stepping down, she began to give the nomination serious consideration.
She says she’s been preparing for this her entire life, growing up in St. John’s East and being a community and labour activist.
Shortall says her experience dealing with the politics involving unions and the Federation of Labour will set her apart from the pack. She says it was the natural “next step” as she has dealt more with federal politics than provincial in her past work.
