A man in the Come By Chance area is planning to recreate a dramatic dory ride this morning to help raise funds for the local food bank.
Ron White is the great-great-grandson of John Gilbert. Each year he dresses as his ancestor and hosts guided hikes on the Kerry Hiking Trail in Come By Chance.
Ninety-five years ago, in 1926, White’s grandmother found herself alone in Cooper’s Cove after her husband went away for work. Her father-in-law had taken ill that spring and was dying. The older man passed away after dark on August 13, and she found herself in the position of having to row her dory to the nearest neighbours a half hour away across Come By Chance Arm.
He thought this was a good time to re-enact the dory ride to Jimmy Gilbert’s Garden and back, and raise money for the Arnold’s Cove Food Bank.
