There was no clear consensus at an information-sharing meeting this week between city council and those with a particular interest in the Duckworth Street portion of the Pedestrian Mall downtown St. John’s.
The mall expanded from Water Street to Duckworth this summer but it seems most goers prefer to stick to Water Street and its offshoots.
Councillor Debbie Hanlon, whose duties include downtown issues, says they’re feeling pressure to take the two sections of Duckworth out of the mall and reopen the street. Others invested heavily with the expectation that Duckworth would be part of the mall for the entire summer.
Year two of the mall is scheduled to end in less than a month regardless.
Councillor Hanlon says there are concerns about backup of traffic, some businesses have concerns about accessing their business, some residents off Duckworth are concerned about noise. She says the city is looking for as much input as possible.
She expects a decision on that section of the mall in a week or so.
