A bald eagle that had run into some trouble was recently reunited with its mate thanks to the efforts of a number of concerned citizens.
Area residents noticed the eagle, which appeared to be in distress, in the area of North River in Conception Bay North back in June.
Veterinarians Dr. John Roffino and Dr. Jess Rose of the Baccalieu Trail Animal Hospital took it upon themselves to kayak to the area and safely recover the adult bird which was then transferred to the Salmonier Nature Park for rehabilitation.
Park manager Chris Baldwin says it turns out the male eagle was extremely emaciated, and park staff gave him a helping hand.
Rescued birds of prey are fed things like mice and rats, as well as moose and a type of wet food product. Medications were also provided to the eagle to help in his recovery.
Baldwin says Dr. Roffino and Dr. Rose turned the late July reunion of the eagle with his long-time mate into a bit of a community event.
