St. John’s city council has unanimously voted to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30.
The holiday was legislated by the federal government earlier this year to honour the victims of the country’s residential school system in the wake of hundreds of unmarked graves being found at former school sites across the country.
On September 30, which is next Thursday, municipal buildings and facilities will close.
All residents are being encouraged to take time on the holiday to learn more about the residential school system in Canada, and the histories and cultures of indigenous populations.
Resources will be made available on the city’s website for people to learn more.
Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary says it is extremely important for people to understand the history behind the new holiday, and to educate everyone around us about how to move forward in the face of the atrocities committed.
As well, city staff will recognize Orange Shirt Day leading up to September 30.
