The province is looking at the possibility of employing rapid COVID testing in schools, but the Chief Medical Officer of Health cautions about the way in which rapid testing is used.
Some provinces, including Nova Scotia, have been using rapid tests among students to try to identify potential exposures earlier.
The Marystown region is under Alert Level 3 due to an outbreak among students linked to Sacred Heart Academy.
Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says rapid testing in schools is something the province is looking at.
She says the use of rapid testing in asymptomatic people may not give you “the best bang for the buck.” She’s not sure rapid testing would have made a difference in the Marystown situation because they identified the initial case fairly quickly.
