Tribute was paid in the House of Assembly last week for a centenarian who celebrated her 102nd birthday earlier this month.

Baie Verte-Green Bay MHA Brian Warr says Maggie Short was born in 1919 in Beaumont, Long Island.

The former Maggie Oke married in 1940, and in 1952, they floated their home across the water from Beaumont to South Brook.

She raised a family of six girls and one boy, all while attending to boarders, chickens and ducks, fish and wood and her vegetable and flower gardens.

Warr says Short still loves her flower garden and only recently handed tending duties over to family members “under her strict supervision.’

Short celebrated her birthday with family and friends in her home where she still lives.

Warr says when Maggie was told she was getting a pair of new shoes for her birthday, she quipped “good, I’ll wear them to the dance.”
