The VOCM Cares Happy Tree campaign is officially underway.

The Happy Tree, which partners with the Salvation Army, collects unwrapped gifts to give to children and teens to ensure nobody is forgotten this holiday season.

Salvation Army Divisional Secretary of Public Relations, Major Rene Loveless, there are many families this year looking for help.

He says they want to put smiles on the faces of every child and provide them with a sense of wonder and joy.

This is the 47th edition of the event.

Loveless says that number represents just how much people care.

He says he thinks the tradition will continue because Newfoundland and Labradorians are compassionate people.
