Jiffy Cabs in St. John’s kicked off their fifth annual Block a Jiffy campaign on Tuesday, and the donations started coming in even before the official launch took place.
The annual gift drive is in conjunction with the Salvation Army. They’re seeking donations of gifts for children and teens to give to those in need this Christmas.
When Jiffy Cabs President Chris Hollett officially started the campaign, there was already a large anonymous donation.
He says the man read an article about the start of the toy drive on VOCM, which lead to him donating $500 cash and some presents.
Hollett says George Murphy, the late business manager of Jiffy Cabs who passed away suddenly earlier this year, was the one who first contacted the Salvation Army to start the initiative years ago.
Hollett says Murphy’s presence is missed.
He describes Murphy as someone who was jolly and Santa-like. He says Murphy always wanted to help out in the community and that Christmas was his favourite time of year.
