The Harbour Grace Fire Brigade battled a significant blaze in Riverhead yesterday afternoon.
The fire consumed a residential garage and nearby camper, sending huge plumes of thick black smoke into the sky. Siding on a nearby house and a truck incurred minor heat damage.
The fire, clearly visible from most of Harbour Grace and from the Veteran’s Memorial Highway, forced the temporary closure of the Conception Bay Highway. It took an hour and a half for firefighters to take down the blaze.

Chief David Earle says an added challenge was that combustibles and other materials were left inside.
He says there were propane and oxygen cylinders left inside, which were a significant danger.
