An investigation into the death of a man while in RCMP custody in Happy Valley-Goose Bay has concluded that there was no criminal conduct on behalf of the police force in question.
The Serious Incident Response Team was called in in December of 2020 after a 35-year-old man was found dead after being placed in a cell.
SIRT today released the results of the RNC investigation into the incident.
A taxi driver called the RCMP when he could not get an intoxicated man out of his cab. Police took the man to the corrections facility. Staff found him unresponsive at about 9:30 the night of December 17 and he was pronounced dead a short time later.
SIRT-NL says RNC did the investigation properly, and that there was no evidence of bias, tunnel vision or lack of objectivity on their part.
