The Foster Families Association of Newfoundland and Labrador would love to have such living arrangements in every corner of the province but the reality is they do not have that luxury.
There are about 900 kids in care province-wide but only about 615 foster homes.
Kelli Dawe, the executive director of the Foster Families Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, says it’s not difficult to become a foster parent but there is a process to follow in order to ensure children end up in good homes.
Sometimes, children end up having to leave their community and friends because of a shortage of homes.
Kids are already experiencing enough trauma when being placed in foster care and having to leave community, school and friends only adds to the stress, says Dawe.
