A Goulds family involved in beef farming are devastated after one of their cows got caught in a piece of rope apparently set up intentionally at pasture land in Foxtrap.
The piece of land was set aside by the provincial government for local producers to use for grazing animals.
Julie Hollett says she was shocked and devastated on Sunday when they arrived to upgrade some fencing at the site to find one of their prize cows deceased with the rope around its neck.
The police were called and a subsequent search resulted in the discovery of another rope hung in the trees in a snare-like manner.
Hollett doesn’t believe the rope was set up maliciously and may have been put there to capture a nuisance animal.
Hollett calls the death of the cow disturbing and a huge economic loss.
“The cows are family members for us,” says Hollett, “this was extremely painful.” She says the animal in question was pure-bred and one of the finest in their herd, and the economic loss is significant as well.
Hollett and other farmers are fearful and concerned that there may be other ropes set up in the trees and she’s asking anyone who might know about any other ropes have it removed.
