A St. John’s councillor would like to see Metrobus quit the summer schedule and keep the regular one in place.
Ridership in June was at record levels, a time when numbers usually drop off as post-secondary students from outside the region return home for the summer.
The June numbers even surpassed anything during pre-pandemic times.
Coun. Maggie Burton says because of the numbers, she would like to see service levels maintained.
“Right now we reduce our schedule to accommodate the lower ridership as students leave,” she says. “But we’re seeing a complete reversal in that trend with the campuses out for the summer.”
Burton says there were about 300,000 bus riders in June.
The city’s transit authority moved to improve service this year by introducing zip routes which increased the number of trips on the most popular routes.
